Project Description.

The project scope consisted in expanding the existing Walmart store to accommodate a new grocery, cafeteria, garden center, storage areas and loading dock. To make room for the 43,300 sf. expansion, the existing Walmart store's garden center and an adjacent movie theater were demolished.

The existing 121,500 sf. of store areas were also renovated and included new merchandising plans, new flooring and ceiling finishes, new bathrooms, employee lounge, vision center and pharmacy. In addition to this, the existing structural elements were seismically retrofitted and new roof waterproofing was installed.

Quality control for compressive strength determination of the concrete used in the project was executed via the use of maturity models, in which sensors were left embedded in the concrete so as to provide temperature readings as the curing process progressed.

Project Highlights.

  • Seismic reinforcement to existing structure.
  • New structure in steel with prefab concrete panels.
  • Shallow foundations
  • Quality controls of concrete performed with maturity indexes vs. concrete cylinders.
