Project Description.

The airport was originally constructed in the mid-1940 by the U.S. Army and was an Air Force B-52 Strategic Air Command Base in the 1950, formerly known as Ramey Air Force Base. The Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) took over ownership of the airfield in the 1970s. The current airfield configuration consists of one runway, two partial-length taxiways, several connectors' taxiways, two large ramp areas, and an unoccupied "South Area" taxiway. Portions of the current pavement network are over 50 years old. This project included the pavement rehabilitation of portions of Taxiway A and Connectors C & D. The total area to be rehabilitated with new asphalt was 625,498 SQFT.

JRT performed construction supervision of the taxiways' and connectors' rehabilitation. A phasing plan of seven stages was developed. The works consisted covering some existing areas with 2" of new asphalt. Other areas were excavated to the full depth, filled with crushed aggregate base and covered with asphalt course. All rehabilitated areas were painted with the required markings. Pavement and subgrade compaction tests were performed.

Project Highlights.
