Project Description.

This building is the first fire station the Federal Aviation Administration sponsored in exposed concrete. Such structures in the United States tend to be square and in structural steel. The Station at the Aguadilla Rafael Hernández Airport has a complete concrete exposed structure which makes it a unique architectural work for this purpose.

The two story building is designed for self-sufficiency. All disciplines highlight the sustainability design that provides better environmental quality and lower maintenance costs for the owner. The exposed concrete provides an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs, avoiding the need for exterior paint. The curved roofs at different levels allow the uptake of rain water, which is stored in an underground cistern and then filtered to use. The north and south window walls provide natural light to offices and training rooms, reducing the use of lamps during the day. The tempered glass windows are highly efficient reducing electrical costs with a lower demand for air conditioning. Also the building uses solar panels that feed on sunlight to heat water for the kitchen and bathrooms.
